Frieze Sculpture 2018
Regent’s Park, London, UK
July – 7 October 2018
If you live in London—or just happen to be passing by before 7 October—don’t miss Frieze Sculpture 2018, the dynamic art show currently transforming Regent’s Park. Here, you’ll encounter an inspiring selection of large-scale sculptures by artists from around the globe.
Regent’s Park, an English garden with strong French influences, is hosting Frieze Sculpture for the second time, providing the perfect backdrop for these artworks. Featuring works from 25 artists across five continents and presented by leading galleries, the exhibition has been on display for about three months—and luckily, there are still a few days left to explore it.
We at The Art Berries were there to experience it firsthand, and we wanted to share a fresh, personal interpretation of the artworks through our photos. Here’s our curated selection—hope you enjoy it!
One of our favourites was No. 814 (2018) by Rana Begum (b. 1977, Bangladesh). Begum created a colourful stained-glass structure that interacts with light, reflecting and refracting it to create an ever-changing experience as you move around it. Equally mesmerizing was Dan Graham’s London Rococo (2012) (b. 1942, USA), a glass pavilion that comes alive when visitors enter—just as we at The Art Berries discovered.
We also came face to face with a towering penguin by John Baldessari (b. 1931, USA), who playfully subverts expectations by representing himself as a six-foot-seven-inch-tall penguin. And Tim Etchells (b. 1962, UK) presented Everything is Lost, a text-based work where letters appear as a loose constellation across the landscape, evoking the concept that they are already lost.
Then, among many others, we were captivated by Kimsooja’s (b. 1957, South Korea) A Needle Woman: Galaxy Was a Memory, Earth Is a Recollection (2014). This 14-meter-high needle structure uses a single needle as an intersection of distance and memory, stitching a cosmic narrative across scale and space.
This year’s artworks were selected and curated by Clare Lilley, Director of Programmes at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The full list of participating artists includes: Larry Achiampong, John Baldessari, Rana Begum, Yoan Capote, James Capper, Elmgreen & Dragset, Tracey Emin, Tim Etchells, Rachel Feinstein, Barry Flanagan, Laura Ford, Dan Graham, Haroon Gunn-Salie, Bharti Kher, Kimsooja, Michele Mathison, Virginia Overton, Simon Periton, Kathleen Ryan, Sean Scully, Conrad Shawcross, Monika Sosnowska, Kiki Smith, Hugo Wilson, and Richard Woods.
